June '98 Events

Chumuckla Jeeping June 7th with Brian & Holly Worley (write up by Linda Andrews and Brian Worley-- Thanks guys!!) We started the day with a snake trying to bite everyone's tires after Brian ran over his head! I believe Nancy wanted to collect this snake as a gift for Holly in return for the lizard she tried to give Nancy on a Blackwater ride! The first trail had some mud and lots of bugs as did the rest of the trails! The trail ended at Escambia River and we got to go back through the mud again. It was a little rougher the second time around. Only a minor problem occurred - Joe Johnson's distributor on his CJ-5 got wet and wouldn't start. The "Pit Crew" jumped on the problem and had him ready to go in no time at all. The next area had a small creek crossing (which several of us ended up wading in) and a washed out area that was fun until David Blair's fuel pump went out and Mike Waybright's wheel bearing went out. Jay Rios in Stinger ended up towing David's Jeep out to the road- that was the end of David's fun for the day! Mike and Tim headed to Milton to get parts to repair Mike's Jeep and while they were getting parts and repairing, the rest of us headed to the creek for lunch and a swim. After lunch we regrouped at Brian's house and headed to the next trail. Jay finally got what he had been waiting for - a true challenge. We would like to name this mud hole - Jay's hole, due to Jay getting stuck not once, but three times!! Those of us who knew what lay ahead, pulled to the side to let Jay go first. And he got really stuck. Taz truly enjoyed pulling him out! Jay, Chris, Mike and Cary made it through the hole on the high side, the rest of us without lockers went around. Jay made another attempt to cross the mud - no luck! Taz pulled him out again! The next and final attempt to conquer this obstacle by Stinger resulted in having Mike winch him out of the hole. Everyone enjoyed watching Jay's valiant attempts at conquering this mud hole! On the way out, we located a fun area "roller coaster hill". It was a road up a little hill with dirt terraces (about 8 ft. tall), one right after another (about 15). Everyone, with the exception of Brian and Holly whose brake line was broken at this point, really enjoyed the hills. On the way to the highway, the road was blocked at one point by a fallen tree. We got to see "He-man", Brian, in action as he single handedly moved the tree so we could pass. The day ended at Brian and Holly's house with a cookout and Bob may have lost his title as "grillmaster". Brian sure grilled us a fine supper. We need to do this ride again, soon! Members and visitors present were Bob & Linda Andrews, Brian & Holly Worley, Joe Johnson & Mary Valbrecht, Jay & Nancy Rios, Cary Ancelet, Mike & Gill Waybright, Mike Walter, Chris Gahimer, Tim Waybright (brother of guess who..), James Clark and David Blair.

Dauphin Island Ride June 13th led by Susan Council and Brian Wilson started out slow with George and Lynn Hamilton showing up with a broken clutch linkage. Fortunately with the help of Chris Gahimer and some new bolts, they were on the road in no time! We waited for the ferry to Dauphin Island for over an hour since we couldn't all fit on the one leaving when we got there. We had 12 Jeeps, but still didn't fill the ferry up. The breeze felt good across the water. Upon arrival we found out from Pete & Tina Willingham that where we were going to ride was closed and all the beach area had "no swimming" signs posted! After talking to the local law, we went to the far west end of the island (where we were planning on riding), parked and walked to the beach. The boys had fun on a large piece of Styrofoam and we played in the surf until stung by jellyfish. They are rampant everywhere!!! Katie Andrews and Susan Council got it. Jim Young got it too, but he's a lot tougher than they are. The men played catch with a football like thing with a tail called a vortex and the women had fun laughing at them trying to catch it. Don't put that beer down!! We didn't get to ride any good trails, but the company was good! I think we can mark Dauphin Island off the trail map so far as I'm concerned. The Navarre beaches are better AND closer!! Members and visitors present were Susan Council, Brian & (can you believe it?!!?) Sharon Wilson, Bob & Linda Andrews, Ed Stork, James & Marie Young, Mike & Diane Walter, Chris Gahimer, George & Lynn Hamilton, Mike Mills, Larry & Kathy Schoenberg (welcome back!!), Derek Simmons, Mike Miller and Pete & Tina Willingham

Mud Bog May 30th with Panhandle 4x4 club, led by Erich Connally and Kelly Marquis started out being very wet. And lucky for us that Will didn't take off his hard top or it would have been worse!! And after all, what is a mud bog all about anyway, if not Mud?! The races were a little slow on starting and the timers didn't work for a while, but after it got going, it was a lot of fun! Our own John Taylor took second place in the 6cyl event, Gregg Evans took 2nd in the "E" class and even though Kelly and Erich ran in the 8cyl races, they had early runs and the track was still pretty boggy so the later times were faster. We learned that you can't win a mud bog on a low budget! Erich did walk away with a big trophy however...Ugliest Truck!!!! How could we have guessed?!?! Members and visitors present were Erich Connally, Kelly Marquis, Will & Susan Council, Mike & Gill Waybright, Gregg Evans, Tony Copeland, Tim Waybright and John Taylor.

Beach Cruise and Family fun day Sunday May 31st led by Jay & Nancy Rios was a lot of fun in the sun. We had beautiful weather and a nice breeze on the way to the beach. Now, it was a little hot, but we do live in Florida!! The water was a perfect temperature, but infested with Jellyfish, so we only got in the water once (well, Jay got in twice and suffered a second time --- bad judgment? Who knows?!) Poor Dana got stung and was a tearful heap for the rest of the day. Where was that meat tenderizer when you need it?! We decided that not only do we need a jeep first aid kit, we need a special beach kit!! Nancy actually got a sunburn and we decided that she really is white like her driver's license says and not Puerto Rican like she's been telling us. The accent is fake if you really listen to it...We talked about our favorite things (Jeeps) and the day was nice. We came back by way of Navarre to stop at the Sonic in Gulf Breeze for shakes and splits. The good officer J. Guthrie stopped by to tell us not to loiter, so we moved on after refilling Derek's radiator. Members and visitors present were Jay & Nancy Rios, Susan & Will Council, Derek & Janine Simmons, Jean & Tony Copeland, Brendan O'Gara, Brad & Lisa Bowen and Jimmy Guthrie (in a Jeep wannabe).

2nd Annual Blackwater Camping Trip & Fireworks, Fri 7/3 thru Sun 7/5/98

And what a blast it was! Organized by Susan Council and Linda Andrews, who were kind enough to take their campers up to the sites on the PRIOR SUNDAY to make sure we got spaces.

The first day's ride was led by JR; should've left by 10 a.m. but all the Jeep enthusiasts were still standing around flapping their jaws at 11.30! Finally got the show on the road with 9 Jeeps - a good showing of CJ 5's, 7's, and 8's and one lone token Wrangler! We headed for the Fisheries, after a false start and not much help from JR's new toy- the coveted GPS (we have the technology, just need to figure out how to use it!). Found a very annoyed tortoise, which promptly tried to poop all over JR's hand! After that trail, we headed for River Road, which earned its name with plenty of water crossings. Gill (on her near enough maiden voyage with her old lady 1971 CJ5) managed to stall out in the middle of the stream and had to be towed out by Brian Worley. James Buck, not wanting Gill to look like a complete novice (which she freely admits to anyway!), did the exact same thing and had to be pulled also. Then Brian got stuck and Gill lost her "virgin extractor status" (Kelly's phrase, not mine!) and tugged him gently out backwards! We stopped for lunch at the old Boy Scout campsite and had a great time swimming and playing around in the water, though Mike Waybright did the "I've got a wasp in my shirt" dance and ended up getting stung a couple of times. Peggy to the rescue with the first aid kit! At the end of River Road a few Jeeps broke off and headed for home; I'm sure some riding was done after that and plenty of jaw flapping around the non-existent campfire later that evening. Members and visitors present were: Bob & Linda Andrews, Will & Susan Council, JR & Peggy Shelley, James & Julie Buck, Mike & Gill Waybright, Kelly Marquis, Brian & Holly Worley, Larry & Kathy Schoenberg

The Saturday's ride was also late getting off the ground, got to get up there a bit earlier guys! Jimmy G. was running point, after joining us late, and JR was leading the rest of the pack. Thomas Callaway, who was at Krul camping, joined us with his TJ. We headed off down to the sand pit area, along some REALLY muddy trails. They kept changing from gravel to no traction, and Gill learned another important lesson while sliding into the ditch. DON'T HIT MUD GOING TOO FAST!!! Luckily, nothing and nobody were hurt and Jay & Jimmy and Chris showed up just in time for Jay to winch her out. Yes, Jay, I will show you the pictures - honest!

Over to Susan's write-up...

Partway through one of the trails, a large tree blocked the trail. Though I'm sure the men thought about driving over it, common sense and testosterone made them want to move it out of the way. JR came up with a small hatchet and about 1 ½ hours and 2 gallons of sweat later they chopped it through and were able to winch it out of the road. The trail had some nice off-camber sections. Cary Ancelet (Grunt) had problems and had to be pulled through one of the biggest lean areas. We almost got to see him fall out while driving since he forgot his seatbelt! (Consider the cowbell passed on to you, Cary). After the ride we split up; some for swimming at the campsite or more wheeling for the hardcore group. Jimmy found a good-sized log and couldn't get over it, even with lots of "encouragement" from Jay. Finally he got the angle right and made it, then it was Jay's turn. Jay managed to high-center himself on it and had to be yanked off! Way to go Jay! And thanks to Ed for the inside info ...The hardcore group limped back later with Taz (Chris Gahimer) towing Stinger (Jay Rios) again!! Doesn't that make twice Taz has saved Stinger's hide? It was electrical problems this time. Not the engine itself, so guess I don't win the bet yet. Chris & Jay left for Pensacola in Bubba-mode. Rumor has it that Chris was a little too enthusiastic about getting Stinger and contents home in good time and had Jay & Nancy fearing for their lives going round bends at high rates of speed!

The rest of the group set off for Pace to watch the 4th July Fireworks Show. George & Linda Hamilton made it to the campground Sat afternoon (just because Linda had to work that day ... all the new parts that George has been buying lately) and joined us going to Pace. We also picked up Brian and Holly Worley and John Taylor in Pace. The Worley's were in Holly's prized Camaro convertible which Brian claimed was a Jeep with a Camaro package on it. I wasn't fooled. The show wasn't as good as it was last year, but the company was better and more of it. We surrounded Mike and Cathy Hutto who were there in a CJ 5. We figured we'd fit right in with them.

On the way home to Pensacola, Mike Walter had the fun experience of losing a wheel and axle on the highway while going 55 mph. Talk about white-knuckling! Fortunately nobody got hurt and he only destroyed the backing plate. Even all the small brake parts were recovered. Sam's towing had to come get him since Bubba couldn't do it without a wheel. The Sunday crowd drug themselves out in the morning and were told by one of the rangers about a waterfall. 4 Jeeps went to find it. The area was overgrown and covered with fallen trees, but was very pretty and the water was COLD. After cleaning up all the trash, we headed for home. We might think about a clean up there with the help of the rangers in the future.

All in all a great weekend for the 2nd annual 4th of July Blackwater Camping trip. Members and visitors present were: Will & Susan Council, JR & Peggy Shelley, James & Julia Buck, Bob & Linda Andrews, Kelly Marquis, Chris Gahimer, Mike & Diane Walter, Jay & Nancy Rios, Cary Ancelet (he is married, we've now seen his wife) Larry & Kathy Schoenberg, Ed Stork, Derek Simmons, Mike & Gill Waybright, Jimmy & Vanessa Guthrie, George & Lynn Hamilton, Tim Waybright, Brian & Holly Worley, Mike Miller, deep breath, Thomas Callaway and Mike & Cathy Hutto. Whew.

Beach Ride, Gulf Shores July 11th

Susan Council and Linda Andrews leading. The ride location was changed due to the Blue Angels flying over Pensacola Beach that day. We met at Fairfield and Hwy 98 and headed west to Perdido Key. Parked up at the Innerarity Point/Perdido Key picnic area. Had a nice shady spot to hang out in and swam, talked, ate and generally had a good time. Not many jelly fish this time, and the water was kind of cool for a change. Managed to hang out till sunset and watch the kids playing themselves out. Also got to see Tom Callaway running after someone on the boardwalks and going too fast to turn a corner. He did what any normal (!) person would do and somersaulted over the railing, landing gracelessly on his back, but fortunately not hurting anything. By some quirk of fate we were all looking at him (must've let out a blood-curdling yell or something) and couldn't believe our eyes. After finally eating our fill we decided to pack up and head for Pensacola to the Sonic just off Navy Blvd. Ed had some glow sticks and we fastened them on our antennas - looked pretty good and certainly drew some looks, UFO's maybe! Filled up at Sonic with cold drinks and dessert and then it was off home. Members and visitors present were: Mike & Gill Waybright, Will & Susan Council, Bob & Linda Andrews, Ed Stork, Jay & Nancy Rios, Jim Young, JR & Peggy Shelley (Peggy in air-conditioned luxury), Tom Callaway, and Tim Waybright.

Just in time to fall into bed and get ready for the next day's ride ...

Eglin Reservation July 12th

Ed Stork leading. We met up at Winn Dixie parking lot in Navarre and headed out to the area formerly known as the mud pit. Erich C. will be pleased to know that not even Gill got stuck where he previously swamped the Beast, the whole thing was pretty much dried up. We played around there for a while , then headed for the reservation off Highway 87. It was pretty dusty with not much standing water. We ran the powerlines trail and actually found plenty of mud and water at the bottom of the hill - James got well and truly stuck in about 18 inches of thick black mud. Susan C. also got bogged down in the same spot. Found a few good spots for some good articulation exercises, with JR, Ed, Susan and Mike getting plenty of air time. After that we ran along a trail headed for a swimming hole at the creek where we could cool off and grab a bite to eat. We splashed around there for a good while -- it was a HOT day -- and then headed out towards Mary Esther and Highway 98. Another hole which is usually a pond provided some decent mud and then we called it a day. Members and visitors present were: Ed Stork, Susan Council, JR Shelley, Mike & Gill Waybright, James & Julia Buck, Bob & Linda Andrews, Tom Callaway (we have a new convert folks), Mike Miller, and Tim Waybright (show up for some meetings Tim, you have more than enough rides by now...)

Blackwater July 18th

JR & Jimmy Guthrie leading. A great turnout of 19 jeeps forced us to split into two groups - the visitors and stock Jeeps, and the big boys ... JR led the first group of eleven Jeeps and Jimmy took the other group. JR's group headed out in the direction of River Road and hit a few short trails with some interesting points first "Keating's Hole" amongst others. The visitors, Wranglers, 1 CJ7 and 1 Cherokee, did pretty well, almost better than some of the old-hand members! River Road was wet, George Hamilton had a few problems with a wet distributor, Mud Duck needed pulling through the largest stream, as did Gill. Don't challenge me like that anymore Will! Tim Waybright hi-centered in a rut, but then again so did I! At least I didn't give my carpets a mud bath, something to be said for the good plastic stuff! The plan to meet Group II at the Waterfall was scratched due to lack of time, so instead we took lunch (along with the cows) at the river. Water was great after all the humidity but we finally tore ourselves away and hit the trail again. Finally met up with Jimmy's gang at the head of River Road. Some left for home and the true blue hard core crowd went seeking more challenges. Heard later that Jimmy's group got lost (where was the GPS Jimmy?) and ended up at the state line. They made it back to the waterfall and waited for the rest of us for a couple of hours. Members and visitors present were: Will Council, Chris Gahimer, John Taylor, Gregg Evans (amazed to see you on the trail Gregg!), Jay & Nancy Rios - and where is Queen Bee? - Cary Ancelet, JR Shelley, Jimmy & Vanessa Guthrie, Brian Wilson, George & Linda Hamilton, Mike & Gill Waybright, Chris Rupell, Brett Misenar, Tom Callaway (need some meetings now Tom), Steve Phipps, Shane & Joy Jobe, Mike Mills, and Tim Waybright.

Winch Demo July 22nd

West Florida Rehab Clinic, Pensacola. Bill Burke, owner of 4 Wheeling America and USA team member of the Camel Trophy event 1991, gave us a comprehensive run-down of essential equipment and demonstration of different winching techniques. These included winching with a shackle block, hi-lift jack and a pull-helper. All the CJ5 owners envied the roominess of his Range Rover! Afterwards he showed us slides of the selection process and the actual Camel Trophy race (what about that team spirit!), while we enjoyed pizza and sodas. Thanks to Susan for arranging the room and projector equipment, and coordinating Bill's presentation. Although it was short notice, it was well attended and well worth it. Members & visitors present were: Mike & Gill Waybright; George & Linda Hamilton, JR & Peggy Shelley (when're you going to start training for the next Camel Trophy, JR?), Brian Wilson, Kelly Marquis, Will & Susan Council, Mike Walter, Cary Ancelet, John Taylor, Erich Conally (love that red jeep, Erich!), Jim Young, Dan & Dana Kinne and Tom Callaway.

Mud Bogg, Careyville

Gregg Evans competed and told us that it was cheap compared to the Pensacola event, started late just like the Pensacola event, and was 1 ½ hour's drive away. However, he did take 2nd place so didn't disgrace himself!

August '98 Events

Blackwater Ride, August 1st

JR Leading. Met up at Milton, and rode South River Road as well as did some exploratory trails. Found a bit of everything. JR went through a deep washout without problem, Mike got totally jammed up in it and ended up tilting the jeep over against the bank! We all clambered out none the worse for the wear and JR pulled him out. Cary, with lockers, had no problem getting through. There were just 4 jeeps, but we had a lot of fun. The day was hot and muggy and we were ready to hit the river beach for lunch and a cool-off in the water. Then the sky began to darken and the thunder rolled in, so we prudently called it a day. Tim & Mike caught the brunt of the storm just minutes away from home - we got soaked. Ended up hanging out at the gas station on Hwy 87 and 399 for a while, then ran for home like so many drowned rats! Members & visitors present were: JR and Jac Jac Shelley & guest, Cary Ancelet, Mike Waybright (with Gill riding shotgun so she could nap after lunch!) and Tim Waybright.

Chumuckla, August 8th

Brian Worley leading. We started out (not quite on time) with twelve Jeeps from McDonalds and headed for the woods. Our first stretch of road was nothing but dust which added to everyone's desire for mud. We fed that desire with our first hole of the day eating Jim and Mary Kay Grahn's radiator. Mary Kay managed to get the fan into the radiator. We couldn't repair it on the trail, so we all went to my house to socialize and run for parts. J.R. and Jim headed for parts as the rest of us did lunch and headed back out. The rest of the ride was incident free. We had a lot of mud. Ed Stork wanted to be like Jay (who was not present) and got stuck three times in one hole. Don't feel too bad Jay, J.R. got stuck in your mudhole. [I just had to highlight that as it's a rare day that JR gets stuck and needs to be winched out!] Oh, Kelly was the only Jeep that did not get stuck. (I think) End of the ride, we all headed for the creek but a thunder storm decided to join us, so we all got a shower at the creek, except for Peggy. She sat in her Jeep under an umbrella! (Comfort lover!) Over all feeling ... Great Ride!!! Members and visitors present: J.R. and Peggy; Brian and Holly Worley; Kelly Marquis; John Taylor; Pete Willingham; Brian and Eric Childers; Jimmy Blowers; Mike Merritt; Ed Stork; Ed Young; Cary Ancelet; Chris Rupell; Jim and Mary Kay Grahn

Thanks for the write-up, Brian

Eglin Reservation August 15th

Ed Stork leading. We met up at Winn Dixie parking lot in Navarre; Fixed a radio problem for Mary first before heading out to the west side of Hwy 87 (when in doubt, swap it out). Took a new trail which was very wet but different. It ends up at the bay, where we all admired the view of Garcon Point, and then we headed back to 87 on a different trail. Got stuck in construction traffic so after a few minutes we peeled off and headed back onto the reservation (much to the envy of all the other drivers). Headed to the gully by the stream and played a while, Mike had trouble with his carburetor on the hills. Stopped for lunch and a swim at the stream, water cold as usual. Afterwards we hit the power line trail and managed to get down Erich's washout without destroying too much hardware (except for Ed, who was guinea pig for the rest of us, who then folded back mirrors!). Played a little more at the sandpit and went to another spot for a swim. By this time thunderclouds were gathering, so we broke off and headed back to the house to help eat Mike's birthday cake (Thanks to Linda Hamilton). Mike Waybright turned the big 40 and kept us all wondering which bodily function would be the first to go. Entertaining discussions, that I will say! (Be quiet Kelly). Visitors & members present were: Ed Stork, Mike & Gill Waybright, Kelly Marquis, Mary Kay & Jim Grahn

Beach Ride, August 29th

Linda Andrews leading. Met at Gulf Breeze High School and headed out over the bridge to Pensacola Beach. First we drove towards Fort Pickens, then turned and headed back to the Beach area. Every jeep we saw was treated to a flyer for the Sonic night on 9/12. We met up again at the large parking lot and realized that we'd lost some jeeps! The visitors and one member without a radio had headed immediately towards Navarre Beach; somehow missed the message to meet up again first. We circled the parking lot several times to make sure no Jeeps had been missed and then headed towards Navarre. Erich was waaay back and accused us of discriminating against the Cherokees but I'm sure they'd parked after we passed by. Found a pavilion at Navarre Beach and grabbed a bite to eat and some of us enjoyed a swim. The water was lukewarm and not near as nice as Blackwater, but on a hot day even warm water is better than none! Sat around and shot the breeze till about 6 and then headed back home. Plenty of flyers were distributed so we should have a good turnout on the 12th. Members & visitors present were: Bob & Linda Andrews, Gill Waybright, Kathy & Larry Schoenberg, Kelly Marquis, Brian Childers, Mike Waybright, Jimmy Blowers, Mike Merritt, Patrick Ellis, Thom Ernst, Tom Callaway, Rob & Melanie Jackson, Chris & Stephanie Ormond, Tim Waybright.

September '98 Events

Sonic Night, September 12th

Organized by Linda Andrews & Helpers. A good time was had by all, we had a record 39 Jeeps show up from very old (Commando), to very new. Drivers enjoyed great eats at 50% off, music was provided by DJ Connection (contact Linda for details if you're in need of a good DJ). Even though the weather didn't cooperate we still managed to have a good time looking at all the jeeps, testing articulation on the ramp, showing off Jeep trivia knowledge, and seeing who won the 50/50 draw and raffle. A lot of members and visitors tried the ramp, even though everyone knew in advance that either Kelly or Jay would take 1st place. Title of King of the Ramp goes to Kelly Marquis, with a whopping score of 1340, 2nd place to Will Council, 1150, 3rd to Jay with 980 and Erich a respectable (for a full-size Jeep) of 960. Okay Kelly, you need to give someone else a chance next time around. Special mention has to be given to James Buck, who disgraced the tradition of CJ's with the absolutely unauthorized addition of WRANGLER flares on his CJ 7!!!! James, how could you... better none than the WRONG ones!!! (Don't get mad at me, Susan told me to give you all kinds of grief for that grande faux pas!) Trivia Contest was won by none other than J. R. 'Jeephead R'Extrordinaire' Shelley; Certificates were awarded (by popular vote) for the following categories: Most Body Damage, none other than Erich 'my Jeep means business' Connally; Ugliest Jeep to JR Shelley (that Robin's Egg Blue is definitely something else, especially with the "special" texture all mixed in with it!); Best Looking Jeep to Bob & Linda Andrews for their characterization of Quadzilla, otherwise known as Barneyzilla for its pretty shade of purple, Ed Stork running a close 2nd with Rollbox. The main raffle prize of a tow strap was won by Brian Wilson (who rarely gets stuck), and the 50/50 pot was won by Dave McConnell who probably bought half of the tickets anyway! Thanks for all the organization to Linda Andrews, to Pete & Tina Willingham, and to visitor Chris Ormon who has all the makings of a serious White Sands guy. Members present were: Bob & Linda Andrews, Ed Stork, George & Lynn Hamilton, Kelly Marquis, Larry & Kathy Schoenberg, Pete & Tina Willingham, Will & Susan Council, Erich & Paula Connally, David & Ingrid McConnell, Mike & Gill Waybright, Jay & Nancy Rios, Mike & Diane Walter, JR & Peggy Shelley, Jim & Vanessa Guthrie, Brian Wilson, John & Penny Taylor, James & Julie Buck - great turnout guys! Visitors: Jimmy Blowers, Mike Merritt, Keith Adams, Mario and Monica Artalejo, Rob Jackson, Tim Kamb, Chris Ormon, Thom Ernst, Carmen & Gary Williams, Tim Waybright, Ray Dykes, Ron Maggi, Paul Marchant, Brett Gheesling, Tom Callaway. Pictures of the event can be viewed on the website, courtesy of Kathy Schoenberg and her cool digital camera.

Hot Rod Night, September 5th

Burger King, 9 Mile Rd/Chemstrand. The hot rod night, was a great time. The rodders took quite an interest in our rides, and their rides were incredible. I was really getting tired of explaining that we're not from white Sands New Mexico, however. Members present at the Hot Rod night were: J.R. Shelly, Kathy and Larry Schoenberg, Gregg Evans, Erich Connally, Dan and Dana Kinne, Brian and Holly Worley, Dave & Ingrid McConnell, Ed Stork, Kelly Marquis. Guests: Thom Ernst, Rob and Melanie Jackson, Tom Calloway, and Pete Peterson, and a "Blue CJ-7". Write-up by Erich C.

Blackwater Ride, September 6th

Mike Merritt leading. Ed reported that they entered Blackwater via Highway 4 and had a good ride, but with plenty of body damage. Steve Toon and Jimmy Guthrie both broke turn signals, and Troy Wilcox broke Dirty Bird's steering shaft. Erich reported: Blackwater was an adventure as always. Howard and another truck rode along with us for a while after we rescued him by disengaging him from a tree. It seemed as if it were only the non-Jeeps that were having break-downs. Visitor Mike Merritt made his debut as ride-leader with some assistance from Erich & Jimmy. Members at the Blackwater ride: Erich Connally, Kelly Marquis, Troy Wilcox, Steve Toon, Dan and Dana Kinne, John Taylor, Kathy and Larry Schoenberg, Brian and Holly Worley, Ed Stork, and Jimmy Guthrie Guests: Chris Weeks, Brett Gonzalez, Mike Merritt, Shane Vise, Howard Donoar, and Kade Youmans. (SP?) More excellent pictures are viewable on the web page.

Chumuckla, September 19th

Brian Worley leading. Unintended negligence by me caused this ride to be omitted from the last newsletter and that, combined with bad weather, probably caused a low turnout for the ride. Still, Brian reported that it was lots of fun, four jeeps rode around in Chumuckla and managed not to get anyone stuck, no one broke anything, and no one got snake bitten! Brian said it didn't even rain during the day, so it looks like we all missed a good ride. Members present were: Brian & Holly Worley, JR Shelly, James & Julia Buck, and Cary Ancelet.

Eglin Ride, September 27th

Cancelled due to Hurricane Georges!

Rosser Rendezvous:

Susan reported that they took Rosebud up there, but didn't do a lot of riding due to extensive damage caused by Will! No confirmation of this but Jay is looking forward to the business!

October '98 Events

Chumuckla, October 18th

Brian Worley leading; 14 Jeeps showed up for the ride; a beautiful day but plenty of dust on the trail. First time visitor Brad Robbins destroyed his rear brake and wheel bearing. Trail fix was not possible so JR graciously volunteered to go get his trailer and break off his part of the day's riding. The rest of us pressed on to the mud holes to play for a while. The first mudhole was more water than mud and most made it through okay. The second mud hole was REALLY muddy and slippy. A few people had to be pulled out, including even Kelly who had Greenie out for the first time with the new motor. I got hung up trying to go round the edge and slipped into the ruts, and had to be pulled out backwards! Took the go-around instead! (No laughing Jay!) After a while we headed back to the broken Jeep to meet up with JR. The CJ7 was loaded up and headed back to Fort Walton (big thanks to JR for his help). Rest of us headed out and stopped for a while at the steps. Most everyone lined up to take the steps, including a Bronco driven by Keith & Theresa Swanson, who joined up with us for a while. Cathy got some good pictures of the vehicles, especially Erich grabbing some air on the way down, and even doing an action replay and splatting Paula against the windshield! Headed out after that and everyone went home dusty and ready to hit the shower. Unfortunately, Greenie's transmission and transfer case didn't make the trip and Greenie is now laid up waiting for new parts. Members & visitors present: Brian & Holly Worley, Tom & Chris Callaway, Larry & Kathy Schoenberg, Mike & Gill Waybright, Erich & Paula Connally, Kelly Marquis, JR, Joni & Jac Jac Shelley, Pete Willingham, Cary Ancelet, Brad & Christina Robbins, Dwayne Bridges, Jason Nelson, Mary Kay & Jim Grahn, David Blair.

Blackwater, October 25th

Steve Toon leading; Met up in Milton on a gorgeous day. Headed out to River Road with 9 Jeeps, a Chevy Truck and a Toyota truck. Larry & Kathy had a bad driveshaft U- joint and Mike Waybright helped out with a trail repair before joining up with the others. Jeff & Tracy Timby out on their first run with the newly painted and restored CJ, looking good it was too! Passed a turned-turtle F-150 at the spot just above the stream where there was a big washout. Nobody was there so we pressed on. Hit a lot of washed out trail with some good articulation. The fun really started where we stopped for lunch at the wide water crossing. Most managed to get through but Gill's short jeep found a BIG hole and buried the front end in about 3 feet of water! Got pulled out after a short wading session and getting thoroughly wet, but wouldn't start. Got a pull up to the next stop which was the muddy crossing. Everyone managed to get stuck here, Tom Callaway, Jeff Timby, even Cary who went to Jeff's rescue! Mud was flying everywhere and the sensible people just watched! Then we got a call on the radio to go and help the guy with the truck to get it turned back right side up. On the way back Mike got flooded trying to pull Gill through the creek! Finally got back to the overturned truck and found the owner with 2 other trucks there. Not a winch or anything between them. White Sands Jeep Club to the rescue. After some handy-dandy winching and digging, the truck was righted with not too much destruction of terrain, although the Ranger wasn't really happy. Don't know if this will impact us in the future - time will tell. The truck suffered a dented cab roof, cracked windshield and a few other dents and dings. He had been coming up the go-around when the bank collapsed under the right front tire, he went down and then the back right gave way and he slowly toppled over. Nobody hurt, fortunately, but a reminder that erosion can cause the washouts to be dangerous. Two other Jeeps came down the trail and hung out for a while, passed out some newsletters. Finished up the ride with nothing much else happening. A great day out, with great weather! Many thanks to Robert Wimberley for his video of the day! Members & visitors present: Steve & Emmett Toon (dad), Mike & Gill Waybright, Kathy & Larry Schoenberg, Steve Spears riding shotgun with Cary Ancelet, Nancy & Jay Rios, Tom & Chris Callaway, Pete & Tina Willingham, Jeff & Tracy Timby, Robert & Sandy Wimberley in the Chevy truck and Toyota truck . Guy whose truck we rescued was Ryan Thall of Pensacola, with Ashley Walden who works with Chris G. at Sams.

JR Retirement Ceremony & Reception, October 30th

Attending: Erich Connally, James & Julia Buck, Kelly Marquis, Mike & Gill Waybright, Will & Susan Council Ceremony at Naval Aviation Museum: Didn't personally attend this portion of the day, due to Jeep breakdown delay (not mine, I hasten to add). It was, however, reported that JR moved everyone to tears with his speech and showed a side of himself that we never knew existed! Then, it was onto the more light-hearted stuff, the reception at the yacht club. Food was great, lots of folks, some very interesting gifts (what did you name the lady, JR?), and a good time was had by all. The party even continued the next day at JR's house in Milton. What did you end up doing with all that food???

November '98 Events

Blackwater, November 28th

Jay Rios Leading. Nineteen vehicles met up for this ride, which ended up being led by Jay Rios, Jimmy Guthrie and Steve Toon, and actually started on time (how big was the stick guys?), which is a feat considering there were 19 vehicles! Headed up Highway 4 and had the first encounter with the Rangers while getting gas. They didn't have any comments but obviously took note that we were on the trail. Some of the trails had been repaired so the fun riding was decreased. Also came across a lot of hunters who weren't really happy to see us, blaming the torn up trails on us. Some even called the Rangers and told them we were tearing up the trails. Out came the helicopter looking for us; they found us at the end of the trail. Four rangers checked all the vehicles for tags and asked about what we were doing there. They admitted that the hunters did not like us being out there while they were trying to hunt, but that we had the same rights as anyone else who wanted to enjoy the forest. The helicopter was then sent away, but they continued to fly around and watch us for about an hour. The ranger we talked to was pretty decent. After we left the area Stinger started to act up, loud click in the rear differential. Then Taz got hungry and decided to eat up Chris' radiator. Jay and Chris called it a day, and Jimmy and Mike W. helped get them home. The rest of the crew went up to River Rd with Steve Toon. If we hadn't been on the right trails we'd have been ticketed. It is also time we set up another meeting with the rangers to set them straight on the club and its activities. Thanks to Jay & Nancy Rios for the write-up & comments. Members & visitors present were: Jay & Nancy Rios, Chris Gahimer, Mike Walter, Steve Toon, Jeff Timby, Jimmy Guthrie, JR Shelley, Cary Ancelet, John Taylor, Jim Young, Pete Willingham, Greg Villanova, Jim Keating, Joe Pitts, Emmett Toon, Dennis Dunn, Kade Yaumans, Jim Brosnahom, Cary's brother Carlton, Jimmy's cousin, Norm Knessler, Mark Tette, Sean Boulanger.

Eglin, Nov 14th

Mike Waybright leading. Couldn't attend this one completely either, due to an emergency work obligation. I showed up in the morning, but they told me that dress and heels wouldn't work with the Jeeps! Mike lead everyone up the powerlines after checking out a tip for a trail which proved to be private property. The washout place at the top of the hill (Erich's spot), proved challenging this time. Mike managed to crush a fender, Jim Young would have tipped out if it weren't for his seatbelt, and Larry S. sensibly turned in his mirrors! John Taylor had problems with steering shaft which were fixed well enough for him to continue. I joined up with everyone at Buck Pond, and rode for a short time (swapped out the dress for the tatty jeans!). A good day out, great weather, and nice ride. Members & visitors present were: Mike & Gill Waybright, Larry & Kathy Schoenberg, John & Penny Taylor, Jim Young & dog, Tim Waybright, and, lo and behold, Jim Keating with his Suzuki, whose performance impressed everyone. He's looking for a CJ5 by the way, so contact him if you know of one.

Tennessee Ride, November 14-15th

Didn't get to hear the details of this ride or see the video due to car-breakdown related tardiness! It was mine this time (but not my Jeep). Susan, if you can get something to me I'll write it up for December's issue.

December '98 Events

Blackwater/River Road Run, December 20th

Steve Toon leading. Ride report from Steve at next meeting. Well, Steve must have killed off a few brain cells over the holidays, he couldn't remember who was there or anything about the ride!!! I guess I'll call you LOTS earlier next time Steve!

Christmas Party, December 13th

at the Patterson's (Vanessa's dad). The party was attended by plenty of people and once again we have to thank Mr. & Mrs. Patterson for their superb hospitality. The evening was rainy so we stayed pretty much in the kitchen and garage. The food was great, thanks to everyone who brought a dish. The annual drawing for the ride sponsorship was won by James & Julia Buck. We even made a short video/animated photo for Ed Stork in Korea thanks to Susan's latest toy. We wanted him to know that Donna is looking after Rollbox very well, and you can hardly see the marks now. Members & visitors attending were: Will & Susan Council, Mike & Gill Waybright, Jay & Nancy Rios, Jimmy & Vanessa Guthrie, Mike & Diane Walter, Chris Gahimer, Larry & Kathy Schoenburg, JR & Peggy Shelley, Erich Connally, Kelly Marquis, Brian Wilson, Steve Toon, Julie Buck, Donna Stork, John & Penny Taylor, Tim Waybright, and Craig Clark.
